If we describe intelligence as “the capability to obtain information, its retention, and utilization for solving problems”, we find that cats are the most intelligent of all pets. If you make an adult cat occupy an area to which it hasn’t ever been exposed, you’ll find how minutely it examines its surroundings. This behavior of closely inspecting the surroundings enriches the cat with helpful or even life saving info of its environs. So, rather than saying curiosity killed the cat, we should be saying curiosity gave it nine lives.
The intellectual capacity of the cat is aided by its capacity to utilize the retained information for solving difficulties. Cats are capable of forming “learning sets”, an ability which was considered to be limited to primates. For instance, cats that have been trained to drag packages on wheels, demonstrating that they were capable of combining that ability along with their personal insight to work out fresh problems. In one case, a cat having dragged the box to a defined position, used it as a step to access a much wanted compensation: a portion of edible item that was kept suspending from the roof using a string. Though we are not yet fully aware of the cognitive abilities of the cats, they keep surprising us by their amazing abilities.
Quite like humans, cats learn by observing, imitating, and by trial and error methods. It is learnt that cats can turn doorknobs for opening doors and cupboards, ringing doorbells, switching off lights, plus learn how to make use of the toilet by merely observing their owners doing such acts. Many specialists of animal behavior and child psychologists seemingly believe that an adult cat’s intelligence is equal to that of a child of two to three years in age. We know very well how manipulative and clever kids of that age are. It won’t be wrong to say that cats are perhaps better equipped to train their owners than the other way round.
Having understood that cats are more intelligent than any other pet, cat owners should be aware of the limitations of the cat’s process of thinking, because characteristic human enthusiasm towards the pet could hinder their growth process. Humans need to be patient and have a systematic approach for treating cats’ behavioral problems. For instance, cats can’t think over the past. They can’t prepare plans for future. So, it will be worthless for any owner to reprimand a cat for anything it did a couple of minutes ago, as the animal is not capable of making a correlation between its wrong action and the subsequent penalty. On the other hand, the cat’s actions are not provoked by vengeance for having been insulted in the past by its master. Most behavioral problems of the cats get encouraged by human behavior.
